Site Description
Owned and managed by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the Great Pee Dee River Heritage Preserve and Wildlife Management Area preserves a seven-mile stretch of undeveloped land along one of the Palmetto State's most historic rivers. The 2,725-acre preserve protects and preserves pristine forest and cypress swampland that today would be familiar to the Pee Dee Region's Native Americans such as the Pee Dee Indians, as well as the region's earliest European colonists.

Visitors can tour the Heritage Preserve by automobile via manageable dirt roads or by boat on the Pee Dee River. The Preserve is home to countless species of South Carolina foliage, including four threatened species, colorful asters, lilies and wild orchids. Bobcats, gray foxes, river otters, beavers, wild turkeys, herons, ospreys and wood ducks are common and may be spotted by visitors, along with more common wildlife species. Directions, map and useful information may be obtained from the Preserve website at the link above.
