The Regions of Northeastern South Carolina
The Grand Strand is a 60-mile stretch of coastline that extends from the North Carolina state line at Little River southward to historic Georgetown and Winyah Bay. The name "Grand Strand" refers to the beautiful white sand beaches that crown this spectacular section of Atlantic coast line, which is most famous for the beach and golf resort Myrtle Beach.
The Pee Dee Region is the sprawling section of South Carolina that drains into the Great Pee Dee River. It extends from the North Carolina state line in the north to the Winyah Bay in the south, and its historic and traditional center is the city of Florence.
The Low Country is traditionally considered to be the geographic and cultural region that stretches along the Palmetto State's Atlantic coastline from North Carolina to Georgia. It includes the picturesque South Carolina Sea Islands, and its cultural center is his historic Charleston.

Overview
Site of a major Civil War prison camp, the Florence Stockade Trail and Memorial Park is adjacent to Florence National Cemetery, which began as a cemetery for Northern prisoners-of-war who died at Florence Stockade. The National Cemetery's original facility contains the graves of more than 2,800 Northern soldiers, and the nearby Florence Stockade Trail and Memorial Park provides historic displays and a walking path through the site of the Civil War prison.

U.S. 301/76 at Wallace Woods Road, Florence, SC [View Map]
Overview
Located at U.S. 301/76 at Wallace Woods Road on the campus of Francis Marion University, the Hewn-Timber Cabins consist of two slave cabins from a 19th century cotton plantation located on the site of Francis Marion University. The cabins were constructed by slave craftsmen about 1836, feature displays and artifacts, and are open to the public.

Lake City is the birthplace of Dr. Ronald E. McNair, a NASA astronaut, who was killed in the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger in 1986. A monument at this site memorializes his life and career.

Overview
Established as a cotton plantation in 1854, The Columns Plantation is regionally renowned for its classic Greek-Revival manor house, which features 22 colossal Doric columns and gives the site its name. The home is a popular local location for wedding receptions and is also the site of an annual Civil War reenactment.
