Site Description
Established in 1932, the Myrtle Beach Colored School - as it was then officially named - was a center of education for the local African-American population during the Era of Segregation. Located at 900 Dunbar Street in Myrtle Beach, the Historic Myrtle Beach Colored School Museum and Education Center is a restored early 20th century structure that was moved from the school's nearby original site. The Museum and Education Center were established by a joint effort by the City of Myrtle Beach, the Burroughs and Chapin Company, Centex Homes, the Horry Country School District and the State of South Carolina.
Access and Admission
As part of South Carolina's long-gone "Separate But Equal" policy of segregated public schools, the Myrtle Beach Colored School served an all-black student body. For more than 20 years, persons of color in Myrtle Beach attended school here, in a classroom setting that has been carefully recreated in the site's museum. Artifacts from the original school are on display and alumni from the school often serve as museum guides. The school closed in 1953, when a newer facility, Carver Training School, was opened. The school building survived as an aging warehouse until school alumni initiated the campaign that led to its restoration as a museum and education center. In addition to the museum restoration which is open to the general public, the Horry County School District conducts adult education classes here and Horry-Georgetown Technical College holds continuing education classes on site. The dual purpose of the Historic Myrtle Beach Colored School and Education Center allows the restored school to continue its original mission more than 80 years after its establishment.
