Site Description
Old Gunn Church was the worship house for the Episcopal Prince Frederick's Parish organized in 1734. The church became popular during heady days of the Rice Barons of the Waccamaw Neck area. In 1859, a gothic structure was planned to showcase this enormous wealth. A massive and elaborate structure was designed and a huge bell tower was constructed. During the Civil War, materials were scarce, but construction continued until the church's architect, Mr. Gunn, slipped from the steep roof and was killed. Locals came to consider the church haunted and it was not completed for nearly a generation. During the closing days of Reconstruction the church was once again abandoned and later burned.
Tours and Events
All that remains is the gothic facade and bell tower that caused Gunn's death. Visitors often claim to hear his scream or see impossible lights in the tower. Young locals still find this site a treat on Halloween. Guided Tours: No
